Tunnel to Towers Foundation to pay off mortgage for family of late Officer Anthony Varvaro

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The wife of late Port Authority Police Officer Anthony Varvaro will be an honorary starter at the Tunnel to Towers Foundation Tower Climb on Sunday, June 2. Kerry Varvaro will also participate in the 2,226-step climb in support of the organization, which recently announced it was paying in full the the mortgage on her Randall Manor home.

The late Varvaro, a Staten Island native and former Major League Baseball pitcher-turned police officer, was killed by a wrong-way driver on the New Jersey Turnpike on Sept. 11, 2022.

Accidental death benefit

Earlier this year, State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-North Shore/Southern Brooklyn) and Assemblymember Charles Fall (D-North Shore/Brooklyn/Lower Manhattan) introduced legislation to permit an accidental death benefit to the officer’s family after the state denied it.
