NYU Wagner alumnus Quemuel Arroyo is recognized by NY State Senate and US Presidential Volunteer Service Award for his leadership and advocacy for the disabled
NYU Wagner graduate Quemuel Arroyo (MPA 2020) has been recognized with a New York State legislative resolution for contributions to New Yorkers as a Dominican-American advocate for the disability community. The honor was bestowed by State Senator Luis R. Sepúlveda to help mark the 180th anniversary of the independence of the Dominican Republic, February 29. Arroyo will personally deliver a New York State Senate resolution of friendship and cooperation to the Dominican Senate.
Arroyo is the Chief Accessibility Officer for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), and is also the recipient the Presidential Volunteer Service Award for his exceptional volunteer work, particularly in service to people with disabilities and underserved communities. This award, given by the President of the United States, recognizes the role of volunteers in America’s strength and national identity, honors individuals whose service positively impacts communities, and inspires those around them to take action.
Referring to his New York State Senate recognition, Arroyo commented: “I am honored to have been recognized in Albany and represent the thousands of Dominicans that have contributed to the social fabric and dynamism of New York, whether in political engagement, advocacy, culture, food, or other endeavors,” he said. “My dedication and drive stems from the heart of the Dominican community, which has shaped me into who I am today, and I will continue be a voice and advocate for all New Yorkers to build a transit system that’s accessible and inclusive for everyone.”
"He has distinguished himself as a trailblazer, an advocate for accessibility in our city,” stated Sen. Sepúlveda. “In February of 2021, he assumed the role of the MTA’s first agency-wide Chief Accessibility Officer, championing inclusivity and equal access to transportation for all New Yorkers. Mr. Arroyo’s story is emblematic of the countless ways in which Dominicans make New York a better place each day. His dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to service serves as a beacon of inspiration to all of us.”
