ROCHESTER, (WROC) – Senator Samra Brouk hosted a community outreach event with the Office of Unclaimed Funds in Perinton to help local residents search their database to see if they have any unclaimed funds and teach them how to file a claim.

Banks, insurance companies, corporations and the courts are among the many organizations that are required to notify the individuals of their dormant accounts. Officials say many funds remain unclaimed despite these efforts.

“It’s another way to make sure that people understand that there are things out there to help them. I think everyone is looking for free money these days, life gets expensive. So, if this is one small way we can help you claim something that’s already yours, I’m really excited to do that for people,” Senator Brouk said.

Officials add that 19-billion-dollars in lost money is currently available to be claimed in New York state with Monroe County returning over 138-million-dollars’ worth of unclaimed funds so far this year.
