PURCHASE – Senator Shelley B. Mayer (D, Westchester) recently joined SUNY Purchase College President Milagros “Milly” Peña to celebrate the ribbon cutting of a new ADA-compliant bus stop on campus.

The upgrades were made possible by a $250,000 state grant which Mayer helped secure. Senator Mayer and President Peña were joined by Purchase College staff from the Office of Disability Resources and students who spoke about the importance of ensuring that the campus is fully accessible to all who work, study, and visit.

“Upgrading our entry to and from campus and within our campus is at the heart of our commitment to fostering a community that is safe, accessible, and accepting, and where students of all backgrounds, identities, and abilities are welcome and valued,” President Pena said. “On behalf of Purchase College, I am grateful to Senator Mayer for her continued support of our community and for her dedication to removing barriers to public education.”

The original bus stop on Lincoln Avenue, across from Campus Center North, was not ADA-compliant. The project required a new design that would relocate the bus stop to create an area further north on the street that would be fully compliant and create a drop-off area off of the roadway. The new bus stop successfully connects pathways to the Main Plaza and Campus Center North, the Natural and Social Science buildings and the Olde apartment complex.

The work also includes a new concrete bus pad to allow buses to pick up and discharge in a safe manner which will not block traffic on Lincoln Avenue; new bollard light fixtures; new ADA-compliant crosswalks; and new additional ADA-compliant parking spaces in the Central 4 parking lot.

“I am pleased to have helped secure $250,000 in state funding for Purchase College to develop a fully ADA-compliant bus stop and to attend this ceremony alongside President Peña and members of the Purchase College community,” Mayer said. “This important upgrade will ensure members of our community with varying abilities have access to the campus. I thank President Peña and Purchase College for their outstanding commitment to accessibility.”
