State Senator honors Kosovar constituents in marking 17th anniversary of independence
ALBANY -- AS PART OF HER CELEBRATION recognizing the upcoming 17th anniversary of Kosova's Declaration of Independence, State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-23) passed a resolution in the Senate honoring the occasion. Scarcella-Spanton welcomed all who gathered, including adelegation from Staten Islanders in her district to celebrate Kosova's Independence Day. The event recognized Kosova's rich history and honored its citizens' hard-won independence from Serbia on Feb. 17, 2008.
"While Kosovo' is the internationally recognized name of the nation [that shares borders with Albania and Serbia], 'Kosova' is considered the correct and authentic name by its citizens," a spokesperson for Scarcella-Spanton told the Brooklyn Eagle on Wednesday. She added that the Kosovar people prefer the spelling Kosova "because it reflects the Albanian name for the Republic, whereas Kosovo' originates from the Serbian language.
"Recognizing Kosova's hard-won independence in Albany holds special meaning, especially knowing how many Kosovar constituents I have the privilege of serving. I was truly honored to celebrate the people of Kosova for the second year in a row - a community that is so deeply engaged in our community in Senate District 23and I am more committed than ever to advocating for the Kosovar community and standing with them in solidarity, said Scarcella-Spanton.
