Senator Malcolm Smith Encourages Queens Community To Attend New York Historical Society's Slavery In New York Exhibit

State Senator Malcolm A. Smith (D-Queens) announced today that the New-York Historical Society is presenting a Slavery in New York Exhibit. The exhibit spans from the 1600’s to 1827, when slavery was abolished in the state of New York. It focuses on the experiences of Africans and African-Americans in New York City.

"I encourage the entire community to attend the Historical Society’s exhibit and experience a thought provoking display of the history of slavery in New York State. This exhibition focuses on a fascinating time in American culture, a time of great change and innovation. The New-York Historical Society is a center of historical education in New York, and I know that everyone in my district would benefit from this moving and educational display," said Senator Smith.

The Queens lawmaker recently held a reception and tour of the exhibit to encourage local groups to attend.

The exhibit will run from October 7th, 2005 until March 5th, 2006. For those interested in visiting this exhibit the fee is $10 for adults, $5 for children, and free for Society members. The museum hours are 10am to 6pm Tuesday through Sunday, and closed on Mondays.
