State Senator Malcolm A. Smith (D-Queens) announced today that the Laborers Local #79 -- Construction Craft Laborers are seeking recruits for their apprenticeship program. With over 9,000 members, General Building Laborers' Local 79 serves the five Boroughs of New York City. Established in 1996 through a consolidation of ten labor unions, Local 79's scope of work includes: Mason Tending, Interior & Total Demolition, General Conditions and Restoration Work.

"This apprenticeship program is made possible by the Mason Tenders’ District Council Training Fund, which offers innovative classes in a group of subjects, skills and technologies to ensure Asbestos, Lead & Hazardous Waste Laborers Local 78, and Construction and General Building Laborers Local 79 members have cutting edge skills. Through the training courses, members can build on their skills to become eligible for a wider range of job opportunities," said Senator Smith.

According to the Queens lawmaker, this apprenticeship opportunity is available to those 18 years of age and older, who have a High School diploma or a G.E.D and who are physically capable of performing the required work.

The recruitment information is as follows:

Date: October 3-5, 2005
Time: 8:00 am - 12:00 noon
Location: 75 Varick Street (Corner of Canal Street)

Applicants only need to be present on one day of the recruitment event to fill out a registration card, and should plan on spending 1-2 hours at the event. Once the registration cards are collected by the New York State Department of Labor, they will be drawn when needed at random until they are depleted, which could take up to 24 months.

"I encourage all eligible workers to take advantage of this great apprenticeship opportunity," said Senator Smith.
