Upon an investigation involving a shortage of flu vaccines in certain parts of the Hudson Valley, Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) today announced that manufacturers are now shipping additional doses that will arrive intermittently between now and January. In New York State, the flu season often continues into April.
"Health officials say seasonal flu activity is low right now and there is still time to benefit from vaccination," said Senator Larkin. "According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there should be enough flu vaccine available for everyone who wants it over the course of the 2005-2006 flu season. Some vaccine has already arrived and more will be delivered in the coming weeks, so where there have been shortages in our area, there should be more vaccines available soon."
Individuals who would benefit most from flu vaccine include:
o Persons 65 years of age and older, with or without chronic health conditions;
o Residents of long-term care facilities;
o Persons aged 2-64 years with chronic health conditions;
o Children aged 6-23 months;
o Pregnant women;
o Health-care personnel who provide direct patient care; and
o Household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children under 6 months old.
It is important to get a flu shot annually since viruses that cause flu often change from year to year. Those who want to get a flu shot should check periodically with their health care providers. Information about flu vaccination clinics is also posted online by the New York State Office for the Aging at www.flu.state.ny.us.
Residents may also check with a local pharmacist or senior center, or contact County Offices to find out if clinics have been scheduled in their community:
