Senator Young Announces Funding For Cattaraugus County CODE Program

State Senator Cathy Young (R,I,C - Olean) today announced a $16,000 grant for the Cattaraugus County Sheriff Community-Oriented Drug Education (CODE) program.

The funding will be used to continue the operation of the CODE program in schools throughout Cattaraugus County and at special events, such as the county fair. The program helps to educate Cattaraugus County youth about the dangers of substance abuse, and also includes character and self-esteem building sessions. During Red Ribbon week in October they give out 2,000 reflective Halloween bags with the "drugs are no treat" message to students under the 4th grade, and pencils to older students.

"The key to substance abuse prevention is education," Senator Young said. "Continuation of the CODE program will help parents and community members alike to guide our youth towards making wise, informed decisions."

"This proactive project educates youths about the effects of alcohol and drug use and abuse, and the subsequent impact on families and the community. Activities include learning Internet safety; building self-esteem; discouraging aggressive behavior, bullying, teasing, and other problematic behavior," he said.
