State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon), Chairman of the Finance Committee, recently took the time to greet the talented Deer Park High School students who were selected to participate in the statewide Lifesmarts Competition that was held earlier this month in Albany. Lifesmarts is a program that was developed by the National Consumer League to build consumer literacy among teenagers by combining uniquely broad content with an innovative national championship competition. Lifesmarts focuses on developing students’ knowledge in five key areas: technology; conusmer rights and responsibilities; personal finance; health and safety; and the environment. Deer Park’s team was one of only twelve teams from across the state to qualify for the state finals.

"I think it is great that these students are developing the knowledge they need to make informed decisions as consumers and evaluate the risks and opportunities that they will be exposed to in everyday life," said Senator Johnson. "These students have a real head start in developing the skills that they need to succeed in the real world."

Senator Johnson is shown outside the Senate Chamber with the Deer Park Team and their coach, Nancy Binger. The Senator presented the coach and each team member with a New York State Senate Citation commending them on their qualification for the state finals.

"Qualifying for the state finals in a tremendous accomplishment and I am very proud of the Deer Park Team for their determination and success," said Johnson.
