Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon), Chairman of the Finance Committee, recently presented Nilda Alvarez of Brentwood with the 2006 New York State Senate Hispanic Heritage Award at a ceremony held in the Senator’s office during National Hispanic Heritage Month. National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15 each year, and is an excellent time to take pause and recognize the contributions that Hispanic Americans make to our country and communities each day.
Nilda Alvarez served as a coordinator of Pronto of Long Island for more than a decade. Having retired in 2003, she still volunteers at Pronto two days a week. Nilda, a member of the Brentwood Islanders Lions Club, is an active volunteer throughout the community. She is Past Vice President of the National Conference of Puerto Rican Women, LI Chapter; Board Member of the Town of Islip Counseling Center; Past Board member of Congressman Rick Lazio’s Hispanic Advisory Board; Board Member of the Breast Cancer Coalition; Past Board Member of the Brentwood Clinic and Southside Hospital Advisory Board; and Past Member of the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Parade Committee. Nilda lives in Brentwood. She is the proud mother of five children and grandmother of nine.
"Nilda Alvarez has given of her time and talent to the community for many years," said Senator Johnson. "I am proud to recognize her contributions as we observe Hispanic Heritage Month."
