Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) along with the New York State Thruway Authority, announces that construction will soon begin on the I-84/I87 Interchange 17 Reconstruction Project.
Based on a bid of $48,214,229.73, the project has been awarded to the Pike Company from Rochester, New York.
"I am very pleased that we can now proceed with the second phase of this most important Thruway project," said Senator Larkin. "The I-84/I-87 interchange is a key piece to future economic development projects that will greatly impact Orange County. I look forward to the construction beginning shortly."
The contract will provide for the relocation and construction of support facilities within the interchange. These improvements will include: consolidated maintenance facilities; State Police building; relocation of the toll utility building and portions of the toll plaza.
Energy efficient technology is also being incorporated into the design of the buildings to maximize environmental benefits. In addition, the contract will provide for relocation of portions of parking lots and internal roadways.
The contract was originally let on November 24, 2004, however the low bidder was found to be non-responsible. Moving forward with this important project is vital in order to provide seamless transportation to the region. Therefore, the Authority acted quickly to award the contract to the next lowest and most responsible bidder in order to make optimal use of this year's construction season.
Work is currently scheduled to begin in March of 2006. This phase of the project is expected to be completed by spring 2009.
The contract for Phase Three of this project is currently under design and is expected to be bid later this year. Phase Three plans include: construction of all remaining roadways, ramps and bridges in the interchange.
