Parents Would Learn Kids' College Grades Under Larkin Bill

Legislation sponsored by Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) requiring institutions of higher education to notify parents and guardians of their college student’s course grades has passed the State Senate.

The bill (S.223) would require all colleges and universities within New York State, upon request, to notify parents and guardians of a college student with that student's grades and semester grade point average.

"In most cases, parents are the ones providing a substantial amount of financial assistance to cover their children’s college tuition and other expenses," said Senator Larkin. "However, there are many cases where parents are unaware that their son or daughter may be in academic trouble until it’s too late. This bill would require all colleges and universities and other institutions of higher learning in New York to provide parents or guardians with a copy of their children's grades. It will allow parents to intervene if necessary, protect their financial investment, and ultimately help ensure the student’s success in college."

The bill was sent to the Assembly.
