State Senator Catharine Young (R,I,C - Olean) today announced that has she secured a $23,000 grant for the local Jamestown Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The grant will be used for foundation and porch repairs at the Partridge/Sheldon House in Jamestown. The grant was also matched by the Environmental Protection Fund.
The Porter Sheldon Mansion at 70 Prospect Street in Jamestown, was home to Porter Sheldon who served in the U.S. Congress and one of the founders of the American Aristotpye Company which produced photographic paper, which later became part of the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester.
"Preserving historical landmarks enhances the quality of life we have in western New York," said Senator Young. "The local Jamestown DAR chapter has generously taken many upgrades at the Mansion over the years and this needed funding will help them make the repairs to the foundation and porch reconstruction."
According to the Daughters of the American Revolution, the DAR was founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children.
DAR members volunteer more than 60,000 hours annually to veteran patients, award over $150,000 in scholarships and financial aid each year to students, and support schools for the underprivileged with annual donations exceeding one million dollars.
"The DAR is one of the great societies in our country that intertwines the fabric of American history and their philanthropic efforts seamlessly. The DAR’s commitment to provide scholarships for students and efforts to help veterans in the community is an inspiration for many."
As one of the most inclusive genealogical societies in the country, DAR boasts 168,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the United States and internationally. Any woman 18 years or older-regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background-who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership.
