Senator Young Announces Funding For Girl Scouts of Southwestern New York

The Girl Scouts of Southwestern New York will soon benefit from major upgrades to Camp Timbercrest in Randolph, thanks to a $150,000 grant obtained by State Senator Catharine Young (R,I,C-Olean). The money is being used for a full winterization and modernization of the facilities.

Since its construction 40 years ago, Camp Timbercrest was never winterized and lacks modern bathroom facilities. The outdoor latrines were recently deemed no longer acceptable by the Girl Scouts of Southwestern New York, and the tremendous interest in using Camp Timbercrest more during the fall, winter and spring months led to the project’s fruition. The renovations will allow the facility to be used by a much broader array of groups and organizations on a year-round basis.

"The Girl Scouts organization cultivates values, social consciousness and self-esteem in girls while also teaching leadership and critical life skills that will enable the girls to succeed as adults," Senator Young said. "By upgrading the facilities at Camp Timbercrest, the Girl Scouts will benefit even more so from outdoor education programs."

"We are delighted that Senator Young is joining us in our efforts to upgrade Camp Timbercrest," said Lisa Lane-Gniewecki, Executive Director of Girl Scouts of Southwestern New York. "A camping experience is recognized by child developmental professionals as valuable in helping children mature socially, emotionally, intellectually, morally, and physically."

The Girl Scouts of Southwestern New York has been active for over 83 years, serving over 150,000 girls. Currently, there are approximately 2,200 active girl members and over 600 adult volunteers in the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus region.
