Larkin Announces NYS Trooper Exam Deadline Is Dec. 1st

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) today reminded potential police academy candidates that the December 1, 2007 deadline is fast approaching.

"The opportunity to take the entrance examination for the position of NY State Trooper comes around just once every four years," said Senator Larkin. "We need good candidates. Don't miss this opportunity if you have been considering a career in law enforcement."

The examination will be given on January 19, 2008 and January 26, 2008; and February 2, 2008 and February 9, 2008. It will cover the hiring period of 2008 through 2012.

The deadline to register for the exam is December 1, 2007.

The New York State Police provides a myriad of special services that include: aviation, dedicated interstate patrols, canine patrols, SCUBA, counter terrorism, crime analysis, forensic sciences, forensic crime laboratory, commercial vehicle enforcement, mobile response team (similar to SWAT), narcotics enforcement teams, violent felony warrant squad, marine unit, crisis negotiation teams, accident reconstructionists, drug recognition experts, mobile command post, major crimes unit, auto theft unit, firearms tracing unit, hazardous materials enforcement, and computer crimes unit.

Starting salary at the Academy is $50,374. Upon graduation, salaries start at $61,525. After one year of service, salaries rise to $65,357. After five years, salaries become $77,218.

Potential candidates must be U.S. Citizens; New York State residents with valid New York State driver’s licenses; between 20-29 years of age (the maximum age may be extended up to six years for anyone who has prior active military service); high school graduates (or equivalency diploma); 20/100 uncorrected vision corrected to 20/20 (colorblindness is disqualifying); must pass medical exam, hearing test and background investigation; and must have good moral character (felony conviction is automatic disqualification). Appointees must successfully complete a 6-month training period at the Academy and subsequent field training program.
