Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) announced the New York State Senate today gave final approval to legislation (S.5864) that would eliminate the New York City portion of the sales tax on all clothing and footwear purchases in the City of New York. The Senate also passed a bill (S.6327) that would allow localities to eliminate the local county sales tax on all clothing and footwear purchases.
Both apply to clothing and footwear regardless of price. Currently, localities can opt to eliminate the county sales tax on these items only if they are under $110.
"By removing the price limit, we will help save consumers even more of their hard earned dollars," said Senator Larkin. "The Senate has passed both bills but the Assembly has not yet approved the bill for the rest of the state outside of New York City. I sincerely hope that they do so that we can keep more business in New York and not lose it to neighboring states that have no sales tax on clothing and footwear."
In 1998, New York State provided a sales tax exemption for clothing and footwear under $110 per item.
