Klein Hosts Black History Month Breakfast

BRONX –In celebration of Black History Month, Senator Jeff Klein hosted a complimentary breakfast at Throggs Neck Houses. Over 200 attendees poured into the gymnasium which was decked out with multi-colored tables to enjoy a buffet style breakfast of strada, bagels, orange juice, muffins, and coffee. A former resident of Throggs Neck Houses, Dominic Carter made a guest appearance and spoke to the crowd about his rise to fame as the anchor of NY 1’s acclaimed political show, Inside City Hall turned author of a memoir, No Momma’s Boy. In addition, Senator Klein honored five outstanding members of the community: Joe Thompson, President of the 49th Precinct Community Council; Dwayne Jenkins, President of the Throggs Neck Houses Resident’s Council; John Gunther, Co-founder of “Saving Our Sons” in Tuckahoe; The Honorable Lisa Copeland, City Clerk of Mt. Vernon; and Malcolm A. Smith, Minority Leader of the New York State Senate.
“I am proud to recognize the contributions of the African-American community to the rich cultural fabric of our country. African Americans have played a significant role in shaping our history, advancing the arts, sciences, civil rights, government and other fields of endeavor. It is a privilege to work along side the many outstanding African-Americans in New York State government, as well as with those exemplary members of our community who work tirelessly for the benefit of us all,” said Klein.
