Klein Presents Proclamation To Nicola Marricco On His 90 Birthday

Nicola Marricco was born on July 30, 1918 in Selvacava, Italy. He immigrated to the United States of America on June 1, 1953, on the SS Andrea Doria, and became a naturalized citizen in 1962.

Nicola has been a Bronx resident for 55 years. After immigrating to the US, he settled with his family in the Belmont section of the Bronx . In 1968 he moved the family to Woodlawn where he still resides.

Even though he worked as an accomplished stone mason, he still found time to attend night classes at Roosevelt High School (Bronx) where he learned how to read and write in English.

During his career, he worked construction jobs at many New York City landmarks including: the American Museum of Natural History, the Bronx Zoo, The New York Botanical Gardens, and the Port Authority Commerce Building among others. One of his first jobs in America was building the stone walls on the B.Q.E. exit ramp from the Brooklyn Bridge. In 1974, as a member and Shop Stuart of the Bricklayers Union, local 37 he was asked to work on the Yankee Stadium renovations. In addition, he helped construct numerous NYC parks facilities, NYC schools, and Shea Stadium.

In his retirement, he enjoys spending time with his family, especially his grand children and tending to his garden for many hours a day. It consists of tomatoes, hot peppers, basil, celery, and lettuce.
