Title: “Redevelopment of the World Trade Center: Time to Move Forward”
Subject and Purpose: Redevelopment of the World Trade Center following the September 11th attacks has been delayed numerous times. Today, nearly eight years after the fact, the site stands nowhere near completion. In the meantime costs have risen dramatically, the public’s frustration mounts and victims’ families are without a Memorial. This hearing will allow the New York Senate’s Committee on Corporations, Authorities, and Commissions to receive testimony from the major stakeholders in order to determine where the project stands, what processes led to the current impasse, and what the best options are for moving forward.
“The World Trade Center is more than just another economic development project. It is more than just a symbol. We suffered a tremendous blow there, and it is of paramount importance that we respond not with acts of destruction, delay, or infighting, but with cooperation, recuperation, and progress. Families who lost loved ones, the public, and those who believe in the highest ideals of a civic society deserve nothing less. It is time to stop the bickering and move forward.” -Senator Bill Perkins
