As part of a larger effort to revitalize the Downtown Patchogue area, Senator Brian X. Foley (D – Blue Point) announced the approval of a major grant to the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame, which will boost operations at the 19 year old organization.
The Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame will receive $250,000 in much needed funding following Senator Foley’s efforts to ensure senate approval of the grant. The funding will be critical in expanding the Hall of Fame’s operations into full-time basis and for the creation of critical programming for the community.
“I am extremely proud to announce the final passage of this $250,000 grant for the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame in Patchogue,” said Foley. “The Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame has been a valuable institution in the heart of Downtown Patchogue. This grant will insure that that Hall of Fame continues its great work in bringing outstanding programming and opportunities to local residents.”
“We are very appreciative that Senator Foley has been able to get this funding approved for the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame,” said Edward J. Morris, Executive Director of the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame. “This funding is going to help us open up on a full-time basis. Starting this September, the grant will help us schedule school trips and educate children about the dangers of steroids and drugs, as well as the importance of community service.”
Patchogue Village Mayor Paul Pontieri praised the announcement. “This is another example of Senator Foley’s support for our community and our downtown,” said Pontieri. “Senator Foley’s continued support for the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame, the Patchogue Center for Performing arts, and his overall commitment to our community cannot be underestimated.”
Approval for the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame grant comes on the heels Senator Foleys’ successful efforts to deliver $2.6 million in economic development funding for Patchogue Village and East Patchogue. The $2.6 million grant, which was steered towards Patchogue village and East Patchogue using funding from the federal stimulus package, will go towards building and refining sewers.
