(Staten Island)—Thursday, November 19th, Senator Diane J. Savino gave a helping hand to Staten Island families who needed a little help with Thanksgiving Dinner. Over fifty families received free turkeys and sides, courtesy of the Senator Savino, with the assistance of the United Food and Commercial Workers, Local 1500, the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 726, New York Urban League, Staten Island Chapter, and Shop Rite.
Students from Ralph McKee High School, the Staten Island Hurricanes Football Team, and members of the Pink Diamond Steppers helped hand out bags brimming with 12 lb turkeys, sweet potatoes, stuffing, vegetables, cranberry sauce, and gravy to needy families at the New York Urban League’s on 6 Van Duzer Street.
The mood was festive in anticipation of the big feast, with the Pink Diamond Steppers adding to the mood by performing a step dance routine.
“During these tough economic times, many families are having a difficult enough time putting food on the table throughout the year, much less Thanksgiving Day. That is why I am very happy to do my part on brightening the holiday season for Staten Islanders in need,” said Senator Savino.
