(Brooklyn) Senator Diane J. Savino and staff members handed out more than 500 back-to-school packets, filled with school supplies, to Coney Island school children on Wednesday, September 30th, at the South Brooklyn Youth Consortium, a youth organization that offers afterschool programs and job training.
The event, co-sponsored by Health Plus, the South Brooklyn Youth Consortium and Taconic Investment Partners LLC, featured free school supplies, giveaways and information on youth services and programs, as well as the opportunity to sign up for low-cost health insurance. Kids were also treated to a visit by the Brooklyn Cyclone’s mascot, Sandy the Seagull.
Representatives from city and state local agencies, including the NYC Dept. of Education, YMCA, NYPD, FDNY, and the NYC Dept. of Health were on hand to offer information on school, health, and child safety issues.
“In today’s difficult economic times, many parents are struggling just to make ends meet and in, some cases, the high cost of school supplies make them luxury items. Hopefully, today’s event will help prepare children, as they begin the new school year,” said Senator Savino.
