NYS SENATOR ERIC ADAMS CELEBRATES THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL, REMEMBERS THE DAWN OF FREEDOM FOR EASTERN EUROPE, AND COMMENDS AMERICA’S HEROES STATIONED OVERSEAS IN DEFENSE OF LIBERTY WORLDWIDE.
NYS Senator Eric Adams, Chairman of the NYS Senate Committee on Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs, celebrates November 9th, the day the Iron Curtain’s most enduring symbol of oppression and division fell, ushering in a new era of liberty and peace in Europe. Senator Adams marks this anniversary in appreciation of our men and women stationed overseas at posts worldwide, dedicated to the maintenance of freedom and the spread of liberty’s inalienable rights.
Senator Adams’ statement: “So many anniversaries fill us with sorrow and grief that it is vital to remember the days that encompass a surprise of excitement and joy and the spread of goodness and decency to populations that had not experienced independence for many decades. On November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall, the most enduring and infamous symbol of the Cold War’s oppression of half a continent, crumbled under the pressure of liberty, freedom, and human rights.
“For years, the people of Eastern Europe, including the former East Germany, have lived freely, liberated from the shackles imposed by the communist regime on their mothers and fathers. Though times can be difficult, present and future generations ought never forget the horrors epitomized by that wall or the happiness ensuing its peaceful destruction.
“On this joyous anniversary, a mere two days before we celebrate Veterans’ Day in honor of those who served our nation, let us pay tribute to and heap praise on our men and women in uniform serving the United States worldwide.
“Whether they are on the front lines in Iraq or Afghanistan, on the Korean Peninsula, or stationed in any of a number of other posts - all of which require vigilance and discipline to maintain liberty and freedom for people around the globe - let us use this anniversary to honor their work and sacrifice.”
