Senator Adams Replies to Blog Post Regarding Senate Leadership Change

Dear Senator Adams:

   We have now all read that the Senate stalemate has come to an end with Senator Pedro Espada returning to the Democratic Party and assuming the mantle as majority leader.  I can't express to you how disgusted I am at this result.  To have a majority leader whose only interest is in his own power, and who cares not about the desires of the people of NY is an embarrassment.

    I am a strong supporter of yours and I have always appreciated your presence in the community.  I have met you a number of times at Prospect Park events.  I therefore believe that you should be the next Majority Leader and have formulated a plan to bring it to fruition.

    Once the Senate is called back into session, you should immediately disclose your intent to caucus with the Republicans thereby shutting down the Senate.  If I have learned anything, it is that the Democrats will eventually fold and make you majority leader.  After all, if they did this with Pedro Espada, a man under indictment, how could they not do it with you.

    This plan has many positives.  The first, is New York, and especially Democrats, get a Majority Leader they believe in and can support, Eric Adams.  The second is that Pedro Espada would no longer be majority leader.  I cannot emphasize how important a result that would be for the people in New York.

   It is often said that you don't negotiate with terrorists because once terrorists learn they can gain from their actions, you have encouraged terrorism.  That is what the Democrats have done with Pedro Espada.  They rewarded the man for his disloyalty and in doing so, encouraged every potentially dissident Democrat to do the same.  I say you beat them to the punch.

I appreciate your kind words and your confidence in my service to and leadership in my community and District #20.  I fully understand your frustration with the protracted impasse of the past month:  senators are sent to Albany to do the people’s business, and at times it seemed as if some of us had lost sight of that fact.  We are supposed to work for you.

Now that the deadlock has ended, the most prudent course of action would be to focus on accomplishing our goals as a legislative body and as the Majority Conference.  I would never entertain the notion of leaving my Caucus, in whose ideals and values I firmly believe.  To pursue personal gain under current circumstances would be ignoble. 

However, I will maintain an independent mind, and I will always base my vote on what I think is best for my constituents. My party loyalty is purely a function of the dignity of the ideals the party espouses.  That said, we are at our best when we work together.  New Yorkers rightfully demand cooperation and solutions from their elected officials.  I intend to deliver.

I am pleased that the leadership issue has been settled, and I am flattered by your letter and your trust in me as an elected official.  I assure you that I will continue to put the citizens of my district, city, and state first as I work as a New York State Senator.
