Local Woman Named To State Panel

ALBANY, 06/02/09-- Gretchen S. Sorin, of Springfield Center, has been confirmed by the state senate to serve as a member of the Central New York State Park, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commission, Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) announced today. Seward is a member of the Senate Finance Committee, which must consider nominations before they are acted upon by the full senate.
Sorin, the director of the Cooperstown Graduate Program in History Museum Studies with SUNY-Oneonta and the New York State Historical Association, holds a Ph.D. (ABD) from the State University of New York at Albany, an M.A. from the State University College at Oneonta and a B.A. from Douglass College, Rutgers University. She is the past chair of the Governor’s Commission on the New York State Freedom Trail, and has helped coordinate various historical exhibitions.
“Gretchen Sorin has been telling our state’s unique and storied history for some time, through diverse exhibits and in the classroom, educating future generations,” Seward said. “I commend the governor on the nomination and wish Gretchen well as she embarks on her new duties.”
The commission helps communities identify, evaluate, preserve and revitalize their historic, archeological and cultural resources.
The term expires on January 31, 2010.
The position carries no compensation.
