Serrano Statement on Shooting of Police Officer
José M. Serrano
May 29, 2009
Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) expressed both grief and deep concern following the death of Omar J. Edwards, an off-duty police officer shot on East 125th Street last night, apparently by a plainclothes officer.
"I will be meeting with the Manhattan District Attorney's Office this Sunday to learn more about what happened, and discuss next steps," said Serrano.
"I am confident we have, in our government, the mechanisms in place to judge and act appropriately. What we continue to lack are strategies to prevent these tragic shootings from ever happening in the first place."
He continued: "I don't have all the answers, but I will do everything I can to push for a comprehensive review of the incident - not to mention a comprehensive community dialogue, so that we may find in this tragedy the seeds of greater safety and understanding."
