ADDABBO SETS THREE COMMUNITY EVENTS
FOR OCTOBER
Queens, NY, October 9, 2009 – State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr., cosponsor with The American-Italian Cancer Foundation’s Mobile Mammography Program, invites women age 40 and older who have had no mammogram in the past 12 months to have a free mammogram in Woodhaven on Saturday, October 17, 2009. No walk-ins are allowed; an appointment is necessary by calling 1-800-453-8378, Ext. 1. The Mobile Mammography Van will be parked in front of the Woodhaven-Richmond Hill Volunteer Ambulance Corps between 9 AM and 3 PM at 78-15 Jamaica Avenue, Woodhaven.
“We know that early detection of breast cancer can save lives. I worked with the American-Italian Cancer Foundation to bring their Mammogram Van to my district, offering free, vital health care services for women with no health insurance. For these women, services will be paid by the Screening Partnerships of the New York State Cancer Services Program or through generous contributions by the American-Italian Cancer Foundation’s donors. For women with health insurance, their insurance carriers will be billed for services. However, even insured women will not be charged a copayment and will not receive a bill,” said Senator Addabbo. For more details about the NYS CSP, call 866-442-CANCER (2262).
In addition to a mammogram performed by a certified, licensed mammography technologist, professional medical services from Multi-Diagnostic Services, Inc. (MDS) will include:
• clinical breast exam and instruction in breast self-exam by a trained
professional
• radiological interpretations performed by Board Certified Radiologists
• results will be sent to each woman and/or her doctor within 10 business
days (please provide MDS with full name, address to send results to the
doctor)

• If MDS has previous mammogram films, a comparison radiological study
will be done, which in some cases can eliminate the need for additional
testing.
On the day of the Mammogram Van visit, women are urged to wear a two-piece suit; do not use any oil, powder, deodorant or perfume in the breast, underarm or chest area; women with Medicare, Medicaid, or other health insurance must bring their membership card.
Senator Addabbo says, “I want to thank all the generous donors who have funded the American-Italian Cancer Foundation’s Mobile Mammography Program: Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund, National Breast Cancer Foundation, New York City Council, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, The New York Community Trust, and the New York State Department of Health.”
The next two events on the Senator’s schedule take place later this month. He is cosponsoring with NYS Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli a Town Hall & Unclaimed Funds Meeting set for Monday, October 19, 7-9 PM, at the Woodhaven-Richmond Hill Volunteer Ambulance Corps, 78-15 Jamaica Avenue, Woodhaven. Along with the opportunity for residents to see if they are owed any money from the Unclaimed Funds program, the Senator will also be on hand to discuss any community issue.
The Senator will repeat his Unclaimed Funds Meeting on Wednesday, October 21, 1-2 PM, at AARP Chapter 2889, First Presbyterian Church, 54-05 Seabury Street, Elmhurst. Staff from Comptroller DiNapoli’s office will be on hand to help residents find out if they are owed some of the $9 billion in unclaimed funds. DiNapoli explains, “The money belongs to New Yorkers. We want to give it back and Senator Addabbo is helping us do that.” Adds Senator Addabbo, “During this tough economic period, I believe that as an elected official, I need to provide the means necessary to financially assist my residents any way I can. I am hopeful that my constituents will stop by any of the unclaimed funds events and that for some, it proves beneficial.”
For further information on any of the above, please call Senator Addabbo’s office at 718-738-1111.
