              Supports Legislation to Remember the Holocaust

 

 

Albany, New York - State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. (D-Queens) today announced that he has voted to enact  legislation which would designate January 27th annually as “Holocaust Remembrance Day” as a day of commemoration in New York State.

 

“I supported this legislation to establish this special day of

commemoration because we must never forget the atrocities that were

committed upon more than six million Jewish men, women and children by

Adolf Hitler’s regime”, stated Senator Addabbo.  “The date chosen, January 27th, marks the date of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp by the allies.”

 

The legislation, which passed the Senate on February 25th, seeks to ensure that remembrance will serve as a means for New York State to honor the memory of those who perished in the holocaust, the survivors and their families who will be forever affected by this dark period in world history.

 

“New York State has always been at the forefront of protecting human

rights, dignity and freedom for all people” Senator Addabbo explained.

“We have staunchly opposed genocide through actions such as divestment is the Sudan and be recovering money from banks and other institutions around the world on behalf of Holocaust survivors and victims.  In designating a particular day in memory of the Holocaust, we seek to ensure that these horrific events of our past will never occur again”, the Senator concluded.
