Senate Agrees on Meaningful Reform
Kenneth P. LaValle
July 16, 2009
Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today announced that the Senate has passed dramatic legislative reforms essential to making state government more open, transparent, and accountable to the people. The changes enacted were in keeping with the Senate Republican’s push to bring about a fair and bipartisan body that New Yorkers can be proud of.
“While the actions of the Senate over the past few weeks have troubled many, the reforms we have established are a major step toward restoring the public’s faith in this long-respected legislative body,” said Senator LaValle. “The new rules empower every Senator and will result in significant benefits for people throughout the state.”
The goal of Senate Republicans was to ensure that state government operates in a manner that will shed more light on legislative proceedings and actions. The reforms passed will have a positive impact on the people of the First Senate District in terms of advancing meaningful local bills, ensuring adequate staff to address constituent concerns, and providing resources to support important projects.
“Gone are the days when leaders dominated everything that happens in the Legislature. The reforms we passed will allow Democrats and Republicans to work together for the common good — not just for the good of one party, one interest group, or one geographic region of the state,” concluded Senator LaValle.
