Senator Kenneth P. LaValle is encouraging students to keep learning this summer while having fun. The 2009 New York Statewide Summer Reading Program, “Be Creative @ Your Library,” is an annual celebration of books, reading, libraries, and the children of New York State offered through local public libraries.
“Reading is one of my favorite past times and is a wonderful way to increase and expand your knowledge of any subject,” said Senator LaValle. “I am pleased to join with our state library system in encouraging students to continue reading during their summer break. This is a great opportunity for children to choose what they want to read about and participate in other activities available at their public library.”
Research shows that children who read during the summer perform better when school resumes in the fall. Last year, 1.5 million children took part in the Statewide Summer Reading Program. Senator LaValle hopes that even more children will be reading for fun during the summer of 2009.
