Senator Golden Encourages New Yorkers to Sign Up for Free Drug Discount Card Offered by New York State

Brooklyn- State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C, Brooklyn) today is encouraging residents between the ages of 50 and 64 years old, or persons with a disability regardless of age, currently without prescription coverage to sign up for the New York State free drug discount card.

     The new free drug discount card was made available to New Yorkers with annual household incomes less that $35,000 (single) or $50,000 (married) beginning April 1, 2009. Those with Medicaid coverage are not eligible and the card is currently being accepted by over 3,700 pharmacies throughout New York State.

     Senator Marty Golden stated, “I encourage those eligible for the New York Prescription Saver discount card to sign up so to lower the cost of prescriptions by as much as 60 percent on generic drugs and 30 percent on brand names.  Once New Yorkers receive their card, they will receive the discount right at the pharmacy counter.  Some New Yorkers may not take their medication as prescribed, or sacrifice meals in order to pay for medicine, because they have no insurance and can’t afford their medication. This program will go a long way in making prescription drugs affordable to New Yorkers.”
