Cypress Hills’ “Little Red Schoolhouse” Rededicated As State Of The Art School

School to Open for 2009-2010 School Year

(Brooklyn, NY)—Recently Senator Martin Malavé Dilan (D-Brooklyn) attended the dedication of the Cesiah Toro Mullane Campus, affectionately known as “The Little Red School House,”  upon completion of renovations as a part of a city-wide school capital plan.

The school house, P.S. 65, underwent renovations to combine what was two buildings into a state of the art 97,000 square foot, 700 seat facility.

“The schoolhouse has been transformed into a modern facility. Not only will it provide a comfortable and safe learning environment for the children of Cypress Hills; it will open new doors for students through greater access to new technologies, the arts and sciences,” said Senator Dilan.

Senator Dilan and City Councilman Erik Dilan (D-Bushwick) were integral in securing funding for the school improvements.

Additions to P.S. 65 include, a new auditorium, 5,400 square foot gymnasium with bleachers and a locker room, science labs, art and music rooms, and cafeteria. The state of the art facility has also been equipped with air-conditioning and wireless Internet access. Special Education program seating has also been added.

The school campus was renamed in honor of the late Cesiah Toro Mullane, community activist and President of the Board of Directors of the Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation. It, along with 23 other renovated New York City Schools will open for the start of the 2009-2010 school year.

“All any child needs and deserves is the opportunity to succeed. It is our responsibility to assure that they get that opportunity. P.S. 65 will prove to be the starting point of a new generation of well rounded, astute and innovative students,” said Senator Dilan.
