Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C – Poughkeesie), Assemblyman Marc Molinaro (R,I,C – Red Hook) and Sue Crane, Supervisor of the Town of Red Hook, announced the approval of $90,000 to be used toward the restoration efforts of the historic St. Margaret’s Home in the Town of Red Hook.
In 2007, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation recognized the value of this historic site and awarded the Town of Red Hook $450,000 from the Environmental Protection Fund for the acquisition and adaptive reuse of St. Margaret’s Home. While this generous allotment addressed a large portion of the restoration, Supervisor Crane sought additional funds to cover additional aspects of the project that were not met by the initial grant.
“I am pleased that our efforts to secure a competitive grant through the Community Capital Assistance Program were successful as the funding will offset money that would have come from the local tax base,” said Senator Saland. “I commend Supervisor Crane for her diligence in seeking available grants to not only restore this landmark building but to utilize the structure to serve the community at large. “
Assemblyman Marc Molinaro added, "I am glad our cooperative efforts to secure valuable assistance for the preservation and adaptive reuse of this historic site has paid off. These funds will reduce any local property tax commitment, help the town leverage additional resources and assist in making this landmark accessible and available today and into the future. It has been a pleasure advocating for this project in partnership with Senator Steve Saland and Supervisor Sue Crane."
Supervisor Sue Crane received a letter this week alerting the Town of Red Hook that the application for funds submitted through Senator Saland were approved by the Economic Development Corporation review board. “It has been my privilege and pleasure to have a twenty year personal relationship with Senator Saland and his wife Linda. I felt when I was elected as Red Hook Town Supervisor we could count on him for help with this ambitious project,” said Supervisor Sue Crane. “Everyone who values historic property will be grateful to him for years to come.”
St. Margaret’s Home, located on South Broadway in the Town of Red Hook, was placed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places in 2006. The building, currently owned by the Town, will be restored and used for community purposes, serving area residents for hopefully generations to come.
