Senator Bill Larkin recently announced the availability of nearly $1 billion in federal grants for law enforcement agencies to create and preserve jobs and to increase crime prevention efforts. This funding has been provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and will be made available through the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Recovery Program (CHRP).
“This funding will provide our law enforcement agencies with the means to hire and retain police officers while strengthening their policing ability,” said Senator Larkin, “I encourage all eligible local law enforcement agencies to apply for these grants.”
CHRP grants will provide 100 percent funding for approved entry-level salaries and benefits for newly-hired, full-time sworn officer positions or for rehired officers who have been laid off as a result of local budget cuts. To determine if your agency is eligible to apply for a CHRP grant please go to http://www.cops.usdoj.gov/chrp/eligibilityanony.aspx.
Applications for CHRP grants will be available online at the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services website at www.cops.usdoj.gov from March 16, 2009 to April 14, 2009.
