Buffalo, NY – New York State Senator Antoine M. Thompson (D-Parts of Erie & Niagara Counties) sponsors a bill that secures better lighting standards for public buildings. The bill was passed by the Senate Monday, May 3rd and is designed to increase the state’s energy efficiency and protect the health, security and welfare of the people of New York.
The legislation amends the current energy law by eliminating wasteful artificial night lighting to public buildings, which reduces pollution and helps save money in the process.
“The emissions are killing our lakes, tainting our air and drinking water and contributing to global warming. The cost associated with poorly designed and inefficient outdoor night lighting is more than $3 billion annually,” says Senator Thompson.
The new standards take effect immediately and owners of public buildings will be encouraged to comply.
