Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and Assemblyman David McDonough (R-North Merrick) recently partnered with the South Merrick Community Civic Association (SMCCA) to teach residents how to prepare themselves for a hurricane or other emergency.

“The best way to deal with a hurricane or other emergency is by being prepared and having a plan. I thank SMCCA for sponsoring this important program with us to show residents the simple steps that they should take to prepare themselves,” said Senator Fuschillo.

“People should know how to prepare themselves in case a hurricane or other disaster strikes our area. I’m pleased that people took advantage of this opportunity to learn the steps they should take to be ready for the unexpected, and I thank SMCCA for helping us present this program” said Assemblyman McDonough.

As part of the program sponsored by Senator Fuschillo and Assemblyman McDonough, James Callahan, Commissioner of the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management, and Sam Kille of the American Red Cross in Nassau County, and Doug Shearer of LIPA informed the audience about actions being taken to prepare and respond to hurricanes or other disasters. In addition, they explained the importance of families having a plan in place by illustrating how different types of hurricanes would affect Long Island. The three experts also informed residents about the steps they should be taking to prepare themselves and their families in case of an emergency, such as preparing a “go kit,” having a family communications plan, and what to do if a hurricane or other disaster affects our area.
