Senator Fuschillo Names North Amityville Resident a New York State Senate “Woman of Distinction”

New York State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently named Rachel Lee Davis, a longtime resident of North Amityville, as a New York State Senate Woman of Distinction for her many years of devoted service to helping others. 

“Rachel Lee Davis has made helping others and serving the community a true passion of her life. She has devoted countless hours to many different causes, all aimed at improving the lives of others. She is a wonderful woman who sets a fine example for others to follow. It’s my pleasure to present her with this well deserved honor in recognition of many years of community service,” said Senator Fuschillo. 

Ms. Davis was born and raised in Mississippi. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Alcorn College and a Masters in Secondary Education from New York University, Ms. Davis spent her professional career as a teacher. She remains active in the educational field, currently serving as a Trustee of SUNY College at Old Westbury’s College Foundation and a trustee of Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.  

Deeply committed to helping others, Ms. Davis has a distinguished record of philanthropy and volunteer service with numerous organizations, including the American Cancer Society, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Heart and Diabetes Associations, and the Uganda Children’s “Tour of Light”, which raises money for AIDS awareness. She is also the Founding Chair of Benincasa Family Services, a family service agency which provides assistance to underserved members of the Amityville community. 

A strong advocate of equality, Ms. Davis has served as a Commissioner on the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission since 1998. She is a founding officer of the Suffolk County Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women and a member of the NAACP’s Central Long Island branch.  

In addition to being named a “Woman of Distinction” by Senator Fuschillo, Ms. Davis has also been honored by Suffolk County and the Town of Babylon, along with organizations such as the American Diabetes Association, Benincasa Family Services, and the Sisters of St. Dominic. 

          The Senate’s “Women of Distinction” program recognizes outstanding women living and working in New York State whose contributions have greatly enriched the quality of life in their communities and beyond.
