Senator Fuschillo’s Petition Drive Against Mta’s Proposed Lirr Fare Hike Underway

Aiming to Get 5,000 Signatures to Present to the MTA Board at Public Hearing on LIRR Fare Increase; Over 1,100 Residents Have Already Signed.  

          Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today announced that his petition drive against the MTA’s proposed LIRR fare increases is underway, with over 1,100 local residents already signed on. Senator Fuschillo is aiming to get 5,000 signatures opposing the fare hike to present to the MTA Board of Directors at a public hearing they will be holding on the issue in mid-September.  

“The MTA Board of Directors ultimately makes the final decision on whether the rate hike will be approved. They need to hear from the people who will be affected by their actions. Over 1,100 commuters have already shown how upset and tired they are about being asked to once again pay more to bail the MTA out of its fiscal problems. I urge anyone else who opposes the MTA’s LIRR fare hike proposal to sign the petition to tell the MTA Board ‘no’ to higher LIRR fares,” said Senator Fuschillo.  

The MTA has proposed raising LIRR fares by as much as 9.4 percent, depending on the zone and time. Other proposed changes include raising fees for onboard transactions, significantly shortening the time span for which certain tickets remain valid, and closing ticket windows at five local stations.
