Statement by Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos
Dean G. Skelos
November 30, 2010
In two years Senate Democrats increased state spending by $14 billion, passed two unbalanced budgets and drove up the state deficit, now they are leaving Albany without dealing with the fiscal mess they created. This irresponsible lack of action will only push the state’s budget problems to another day and once again shows their disdain for taxpayers.
Governor Paterson called this special session first and foremost to deal with the budget deficit. Unfortunately, the Democrats chose to leave town without bringing any budget cuts to the floor for a vote.
Senate Republicans recognize the urgent need to cut spending and begin getting New York’s fiscal house in order. We were ready to act today to cut spending, but we were excluded from negotiations.
Come January, Senate Republicans will be in the Majority and we will work with the new Governor to address the state’s budget problems, not run away from them.
