(Staten Island) Senator Diane Savino, Assemblyman Matt Titone, and Modell’s Sporting Goods hosted a Victory Pizza Party on Sunday, January 17, for the Staten Island Hurricane Youth Football Team. The team’s four age divisions are the Mighty Mites (ages 8-9), Junior Pee Wee’s (9-11), Pee Wee’s (11-12) and the Midget’s (13-15).
The organization won all four divisions in the American Youth Football Big East Regional Tournament. The Hurricanes then went on to play in the National Championship Games at Austin Tindale Park in Orlando, FL.
The Hurricane’s Midget team pulled out an exciting 32-24 overtime shootout victory over the Scottsdale Firebirds to win the title for the second time in three years. The Hurricanes now have four national titles to their credit.
Last November, Senator Savino began a successful community fundraising effort, raising more than $14,000, in order to send all 100 players—many of whom come from modest means—as well as the coaches and team parents to the tournament.
Other contributors included, Assemblyman Matt Titone, the Richmond County Savings Foundation, Staten Island Terminal, Atlantic Salt, Health Plus, Daniel Berman, Dock Builders Local 1456, Downtown Business Council and the Anthony Gaeta Democratic Club.
