NYS Senator Eric Adams and the Senate Majority Conference protect New Yorkers from annoying phone calls by placing new restrictions on telemarketers
NYS Senator Eric Adams states: “My Majority Conference colleagues and I have passed new legislation to reduce unwanted telemarketing calls. Our bill restricts these nuisance calls to the hours of 8 AM to 9 PM and requires increased disclosure by telemarketing companies to protect consumers from deceptive marketing practices.
“One of the most significant consumer protections against bothersome telemarketing calls is known as the ‘Do Not Call’ registry, and we have strengthened its efficacy. The new law affords a respite from aggressive telemarketing salespersons whose unsolicited phone calls and prerecorded announcements waste one’s time or fill up one’s answer machine.
“Further, the new law requires telemarketers to state precisely what they are attempting to sell and the full terms of said sale, including the length of any commitment.
“The New York State ‘Do Not Call’ law has been in effect since 2001. It permits consumers to enter personal landlines and mobile telephone numbers on one central national registry to reduce the number of unsolicited telemarketing calls they receive. Our new law, which would take effect 120 days after the Governor signs it, further improves protection against bothersome or deceptive telemarketing by expanding the power of the Consumer Protection Board (CPB) to investigate the more than 100,000 annual complaints it receives.”
