PRESS ADVISORY
STANDING WITH SENATOR ERIC ADAMS AND VULCAN SOCIETY MEMBERS, FDNY HAITIAN FIRE FIGHTERS TELL CITY “WE TOO WANT TO GO TO HAITI TO SEARCH FOR AND RESCUE VICTIMS. "
New York State Senator Eric Adams and Johns Coombs, president of the Vulcan Society, will hold a press conference with Haitian fire fighters calling on the city to allow them to go to Haiti. These fire fighters should be given the opportunity to participate in the next wave of first responders that are assisting in the search and rescue effort in Haiti.
Senator Adams’ statement:
“I am proud of the first responders who have been sent into the disaster zone in Haiti, and proud of our city for contributing to the rescue and recovery effort in such a major way.
“The FDNY has the added benefit of having well-trained Creole-speaking fire fighters. For cultural and practical reasons, these brave New Yorkers should be given the opportunity to serve in this capacity. It only hampers the rescue effort if we do not utilize their skills and language abilities.
“The city ought to have at the ready a diverse group of first responders ready to go to assist in disasters such as the one that has ravaged Haiti. We have people from all four corners of the world in our midst – let us benefit from this great and unique characteristic and help the Haitians in this, their moment of need.”
John Coombs, President of the Vulcan Society, says:
“We believe it’s in the best interest of safety to have a diversified group on the ground to assist with recovery efforts in Haiti.”
