State Legislature Pays Tribute To Fallen Trooper

ALBANY, 06/30/10 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) and Assemblyman Pete Lopez (R/C/I-Schoharie) announced today the passage of legislation renaming a portion of state route 32 in Greene County in memory of New York State Police Trooper David J. Lane.

“Trooper Lane devoted his life to serve and protect and was tragically killed carrying out his duties,” said Senator Seward.  “Certainly, those whose lives he has touched will never forget his contributions, and now all who travel along this stretch of road in the Town of Cairo will be reminded of his honor, bravery, and sense of duty.”

“Trooper Lane’s death has been mourned across the state,” said Assemblyman Lopez.  “This memorial shows our collective support for his service and equally for the loss felt by his family and loved ones.”
 
30 year old David J. Lane was killed in an automobile accident while on patrol in the Town of Catskill on November 4, 2009.  He was traveling north on State Route 32 when he attempted to pass another northbound vehicle. The vehicles made contact and Trooper Lane's vehicle drove off the roadway and struck a telephone pole, causing him to suffer fatal injuries.

Trooper Lane had served with the New York State Police for four years and was assigned to the Catskill Station. He had previously served with the United States Army in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Senate bill 7947a was sponsored by Senator Seward and adopted on June 24, 2010.  Assemblyman Lopez  sponsored the same legislation, assembly bill 937, which was also adopted on June 24, 2010.  Under the legislation, state route 32 between Cairo Junction Road and Hearts Content Road in Greene County, will be designated the "Trooper David J. Lane Memorial Highway."

The legislation will be sent to the governor for final approval.
