Albany, NY- A Resolution introduced by Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) honoring Times Square hero Lance Orton passed the State Senate unanimously today.  "It is with tremendous pride that I applaud Lance Orton on his bravery, initiative, and concern for his fellow citizens," said Senator Serrano.  "His heroic actions and rapid response should serve as a reminder to all New Yorkers that we can all do our part when it comes to keeping our city safe."

On May 1st, 2010, Orton, a native of the West Bronx, and his fellow vendor Duane Jackson alerted the New York Police Department when they noticed a suspicious vehicle emitting smoke on 45th Street near Seventh Avenue.  Upon investigating, authorities discovered a potential explosive device that was part of an attempted terrorist attack.

A Vietnam War veteran, Orton demonstrated his dedication to protecting his fellow man, and provided key information that helped save the lives of possibly thousands of New Yorkers.  The Resolution commends him for his admirable actions, and emphasizes the importance of remaining vigilant and alert so that the safety and security of all New Yorkers may be protected.

"Lance's record in the armed forces shows his strong commitment to our nation, and his recent acts to thwart an attempted terrorist attack further exemplify his courage," continued Serrano.  "Thanks to his actions and those of the NYPD, an act of senseless violence that could have cost countless lives was prevented, and New Yorkers and visitors can continue to feel safe in our great city."
