Serrano Reminds New Yorkers to Conserve Energy During Earth Hour 2010

Today Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) reminded all New Yorkers to conserve energy by turning their lights off for one hour tomorrow night during Earth Hour 2010.

The Senator's resolution, requesting that Governor David A. Paterson adopt 8:30 p.m., Saturday, March 27, 2009 as "Earth Hour" in a show of solidarity to combat global climate change, passed through the Senate unanimously on Wednesday, March 24th.

"Last year countless New York State residents joined millions of people from thousands of cities around the world in turning off their lights for one hour. We did this as a symbolic gesture of our commitment to reduce our ecological footprint and protect the future of generations to come," said Senator Serrano.

The Empire State Building, the East River Bridges, various Times Square billboards, and the Chrysler Building are among the many New York landmarks that have observed Earth Hour in past years.

"My hope is that this year will mark the most successful Earth Hour to date, and I hope to continue raising awareness of global climate change and promoting energy conservation," said Senator Serrano. "I encourage every family and individual throughout the State of New York to participate in this environmentally friendly tradition."
