Senator Kenneth P. LaValle and Assemblyman Marc Alessi today announced that legislation they sponsored to create the ‘Lt. Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Way’ in the Town of Shelter Island has passed both houses. The measure designates a portion of New York State Route 114 in memory of Lt. Joseph J. Theinert, a native Shelter Island resident who lost his life while serving with the 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan.
“This designation is a fitting tribute to a young man whose appreciation for Shelter Island and commitment to protecting the freedoms we cherish have touched an entire community,” said Senator LaValle. “The ‘Lt. Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Way’ will honor the memory and courageous deeds of Lt. Theinert who made the ultimate sacrifice in his service to our country.”
“I feel so honored to be able to pay tribute to this local hero,” Alessi said. “Designating part of the highway in honor of Joseph will not only acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice he made, it will also honor all Shelter Island veterans who have given up so much for our country.”
Shelter Island Supervisor James Dougherty said, “I am personally delighted and Joey Theinert’s family is equally delighted and honored to learn that the New York State Legislature has agreed to rename the southerly portion of Route 114 ‘Lt. Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Way.’ All Shelter Islanders join me in expressing humble gratitude for remembering and honoring Joey Theinert.”
