Senator Ken LaValle was honored to join in the celebration of the 15th Annual Ellen’s Run benefit in Southampton on August 22. Senator LaValle is a strong advocate for breast cancer patients and their families. He has secured state funding for breast cancer initiatives throughout the First Senate District and sponsored legislation that ensures medical coverage for second opinions and adequate hospital stays after breast cancer surgery.
Dr. Julie Ratner is the founder and Chair of The Ellen P. Hermanson Foundation, a non-profit organization that was established in her sister’s name to serve breast cancer patients on the East End. The Foundation’s 5k Ellen’s Run attracts more than 1,000 runners annually. Although Ellen lost her battle with the disease in 1995, Dr. Ratner’s efforts to bring awareness to the importance of early detection have been an inspiration to all.
