(Albany, NY)- New York State Senate President Pro Tempore Malcolm A. Smith joined other volunteers this Thanksgiving morning to take part in the blessed Equinox event at the state Capitol’s Concourse.
The Senate President Pro Tempore personally delivered meals to eight struggling residents of the Capitol Region.
“It is with great honor and privilege to serve the less fortunate on this day of thanks,” said Senate President Pro Tempore Malcolm A. Smith. “It is an amazing opportunity to see the smiles on the faces of those receiving these much-needed meals, and knowing they are enjoying this Thanksgiving. We have much to be thankful for, even in our times of strife.”
The Senate President Pro Tempore continued, “A beautiful Thanksgiving prayer by Ralph Waldo Emerson says it best: ‘For each new morning with its light, For rest and shelter of the night, For health and food, For love and friends, For everything Thy goodness sends.”
Equinox has been providing the Capital District with a community Thanksgiving Day dinner for over 40 years, making it one of the longest-running holiday traditions in the country. The Annual Equinox Thanksgiving Day Community Dinner now serves more than 8,000 of the Capital District’s lonely, homebound, or homeless neighbors. A little taste of what it takes to keep this dinner cooking includes:
· 10,400 pounds of turkey
· 2,000 pounds of ham
· 2,800 pounds of yams
· 940 pies
· 625 dozen dinner rolls
· 48 gallons of cider
· 19,500 pieces of fruit.
