Senator Golden Leads Community Celebration Greek Heritage

Brooklyn- State Senator Marty Golden, along with AHEPA, Brooklyn Chapter 41 and the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, recently hosted a community celebration of Greek heritage and honored five distinguished honorees, as well as the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, each for their contributions to the greater Bay Ridge community, on Sunday afternoon, April 11, 2010, at the Dimitrios and Georgia Kaloidis School.

The program included a performance of poetry and essays by the Demetrios & Georgia Kaloidis Parochial School, the A. Fantis Parochial School performed “The Statue of Kolokotroni”, and the Holy Cross Greek Afternoon School performed classical dance. Students of The Greek School of Plato recited poetry and prose related to Greek Independence and the Hellenic Classical Charter School Dance Troupe performed as well.

Senator Golden honored Basil Capetanakis, Stella Kokolis, Zoe Koutsoupakis, Dr. Michael Gabriel, Sr., and Dr. Konstantinos Koutelos. Senator Golden also presented a New York State Senate Proclamation to the Parish Community of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church which was accepted by the Very Reverend Archimandrite Father Gerasimos Makris and Parish Council President Michael Mikelis.

Senator Marty Golden stated, “The founding fathers of this great Nation were inspired by the democratic philosphies of ancient Athens, fully understanding the civic strength of rule by the people. I am proud to represent the largest Greek constituency in Brooklyn, many of whom have made outstanding contributions to our quality of life.”

The Greek Heritage Independence Day Parade will march down 5th Avenue in Manhattan on Sunday, April 18, 2010.
